  • Discover the rich natural history of South Carolina’s Lowcountry through the stories of early naturalists, conservation pioneers, and modern-day birding efforts. • Explore the profound connections between the Gullah Geechee culture and the natural world in my presentation, Gullah Geechee of Mitchelville: Cultural Ties to Birds and Nature. First introduced at the Juneteenth Celebration at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, this talk delves into the cultural and ecological heritage of Mitchelville on Hilton Head Island, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States.

The presentation highlights how birds and nature have shaped the traditions, stories, and daily lives of the Gullah Geechee community. It also underscores the importance of conserving these vital habitats, both for their ecological significance and as a living testament to the history and resilience of this unique culture.

This meaningful presentation weaves together history, culture, and conservation to inspire a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of people and nature.
