Patty generally guides from October through June, when bird activity is highest. The summer months tend to be quieter for birding due to seasonal conditions.

Beginner Bird Photography Field Session (2 Hours)

Learn Bird Photography in the Field — No Experience Required

This two-hour, beginner-friendly bird photography session is designed for anyone who loves birds and wants to learn how to photograph them with confidence. No prior photography experience is needed, and specialized equipment is not required. Sessions take place in the field at carefully selected locations around Hilton Head Island, focusing on situations that are approachable and rewarding for beginners.

Participants are welcome to bring:

  • An iPhone or smartphone

  • A point-and-shoot camera

  • An entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera

What We’ll Focus On

Rather than technical settings or complicated gear, this session emphasizes

seeing birds well and photographing them thoughtfully.

Topics include:

  • Finding birds and recognizing good photo opportunities

  • Working with large, cooperative species such as wading birds (herons, egrets) and shorebirds

  • Understanding light, distance, and background in real-world conditions

  • Simple composition techniques that immediately improve images

  • Ethical bird photography—how to observe and photograph without disturbing wildlife.

Why Large Birds?

Large birds such as herons, egrets, and shorebirds are ideal subjects for beginners. They allow photographers to:

  • Practice composition and timing

  • Learn how birds move and behave

  • Build confidence without pressure
