Artist Statement

Birds shaped by water, season, and place have long held my attention. Along the marshes, shorelines, and wooded edges of Hilton Head Island and the South Carolina Lowcountry, I return to the same habitats to observe—often long before lifting a camera. My field-based approach is grounded in firsthand experience, patient and ethical observation, respect for wildlife and habitat, and a growing familiarity with seasonal and behavioral patterns.

That familiarity helps me recognize the quiet moments when birds settle and resume their lives: a pause, a turn of the head, or a posture held between movement and stillness. I am equally drawn to the visual language of art—to color, shape, light, line, and negative space—and to the ways these elements can move a photograph beyond documentation toward a more expressive interpretation of the natural world.

Centered primarily on Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry, with selected work from other destinations, my photography is not about pursuit or perfection. It is about attention, patience, and respect—creating images that connect bird, habitat, and place while complementing my writing, birding, and conservation work.
