Birding Places and Journeys
Birding is one way I come to know a place. I pay attention not only to the birds, but also to the shape of the land, the names and courses of rivers, weather and season, working landscapes, local voices, history, literature, and the stories people carry. Birds become a way into the landscape, and the landscape opens into its culture and past.
These essays begin on Hilton Head Island and in the Lowcountry and extend to places farther afield. Through firsthand observation and photography, I explore the distinctive character of each place and the connections among birds, geography, culture, and memory. They are not simply travel accounts or lists of species seen. They are attempts to understand what gives a place its identity—and how spending time there can deepen the way we see its birds, landscapes, and human stories.
